Becoming involved in a community event is an excellent way of generating publicity for your business, as well as helping the community. If you have staff, it can also be a useful team-building exercise.
I found out about Reading RESCUE about 18 months ago, and have been involved since, giving my time on the Steering Committee, taking photos of the event itself, and this year helping create and manage a website for the event (which is an ongoing task).
Reading RESCUE is a community led clean-up event that happens every March in and around Reading.
RESCUE 2009 will be the weekend of March 14th & 15th 2009, with many business groups also working during the week leading up to the event.
Volunteers work alongside the Rivers Thames and Kennet, the Kennet & Avon Canal and other streams and brooks around Reading to deal with litter and other rubbish.
Last year over 500 volunteers from businesses and community groups cleared 31 tonnes of rubbish from in and around Reading. This years event, sponsored by Thames Water, is looking to be even larger.
If any Reading based businesses would like to become involved, there is more information at www.readingrescue.org.uk.
Last year there was plenty of coverage in the local newspapers, the Berkshire section of the BBC website, as well as BBC Radio Berkshire and local commercial radio. It can also be very useful for networking purposes.
